The board of the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association is elected annually by the Association’s members who are business ratepayers.
Central to its work, is the belief that the well being of the town is dependent on the preservation of its historic heritage and its natural surrounds.
APBA promotes Arrowtown’s tourism, and liaises with its major funder, the Queenstown Lakes District Council and other collaborators Destination Queenstown, Chamber of Commerce.
Arrowtown was originally known as Fox’s. named after William Fox an early gold discoverer. Then it was known as The Arrow and later Arrowtown.
The trees in Arrowtown’s beautiful avenues are Sycamore, Ash, Oak, Elm, and Rowan. The first avenue was planted in 1867.
The Chinese Settlement was established in 1867-8 and was in existence until the mid 1930’s. The site underwent an archaeological excavation in 1984.
There has been a fire station on the current site since 1890. The hand drawn hose reel was used until the 1940’s.
There are two theories as to why the town is named Arrowtown. One is that the river behind the town flows swiftly like an arrow.
